Possession and use of weapons are punished harshly both in State and Federal Courts. You can be charged with a weapon related crime (such as possession of a weapon in a vehicle), or you can be charged with a weapon related enhancement (use of a weapon during the commission of another crime increases the punishment for the underlying crime charged).
